Web-country Assignment

NURS 456 – Global Health Prospective

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to introduce the student to the major underlying determinants of poor health and their effect on the health of populations worldwide. The student will utilize these principles to create an informational webpage for the country of their choice. (This purpose statement applies to all modules related to the webpage development).

Approach to Assignment

I have always been interested in the Asian culture but have never had an opportunity to really get to know much about it. During my Cultural Psychology course, I read a blog from a student who had done a course in China which I found interesting. Also, I have been following the current national discussion on China. When given the chance to pick a country I wanted to focus on during this assignment I choose China to expand my knowledge of its people, culture, religions, education, and health systems.

Reason for Inclusion

I did extensive research on the Chinese culture during this assignment. I learned a great deal about the country and wanted to share that information with others who might be interested in the Asian culture. I choose a culture which was as different as possible from my own which I had little of no knowledge of to strength my nursing skills when providing care to people of different cultures.

Teaching

  • Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities.

During this assignment we were required to review the health promotions of our web country. I researched the healthcare and education systems of China. I visited numerous websites and read many research articles related to health promotions, common communicable and non-communicable diseases, the challenges involved in prevention and promotion of improved health within China. My web-country includes information on the impact of healthcare initiatives on the vulnerable populations of women, children, elderly and disabled.

Research

  • Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing research.

I did lengthy research throughout this course to compile all the information contained within my web-country website. I reviewed nursing literature and published reports of nursing research regarding major health indicators both statistical and analytical within the country of China. I reviewed information on the Chinese peoples access to healthcare, and the barriers, and common cultural healthcare practices. I read and interrupted information on how cultural norms, occupational factors, environmental factors, and nutrition impact their healthcare using valid creditable references and resources.

Culture

  • Considers the impact of research outcomes and the effects of health and social policies on persons from diverse backgrounds.

Within this web-country course assignment I had the opportunity to educate myself and anyone who views my website about the diversity of the country of China. I researched the evolution of China from a closed country to her economic dominant state of today. With the growth of China came many changes which impacted health and social polices effecting healthcare and the diverse population. I included on my website the economics impacts which have directly changed the health outcomes for the people of China from acute in nature to chronic conditions such as hypertension, and diabetes due to their change in nutrition.

  • Maintains an awareness of global environmental factors that may influence the delivery of health care services.

By creating this web-country I have gained a new perspective on global health and the environmental factors which impact it. I learned about how the governmental choices that China makes directly affects the population. China is taking part on the Healthy People 2020 initiative and has implemented new environmental policies to improve the Chinese populations health and well-being. With the onset of China’s industrial revolution there were little or no environment protections in place which negatively affected the population by creating large amounts of pollution. The pollution created by all the economic growth has affected the world not just the Chinese people. China is working on implementing environmental policies to clean-up the damage, but much of the harm will either not able to correct or take years to correct. The economic growth has impacted the health of the population with increased numbers of cancers, lung disease, cigarette smoking, hypertension, asthma, and diabetes. The population of China has seen an increase in non-communicable diseases over communicable as a result of their economic growth.
