My current responsibilities are to provide nursing education, technical assistance and consultation to community based agencies who provide services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). I interact with a variety of stakeholders to include nurses, physicians, hospitals, provider agencies, community service boards, and institutions to identify needed health services in an effort to integrate individuals into the community. I use nursing practices, standards, procedures, techniques, and knowledge associated with the Nurse Practice Act in a variety of ways to follow state and regulatory guidelines. I develop, implement, monitor and measure outcomes for policies and procedures. I research using EBSCOhost, Core, Medline and other federal websites, cite and reference evidence based nursing best-practice, while writing and developing, editing and graphically formatting monthly health & safety alerts, monthly newsletters, and health training presentations on a variety of topics. I regularly perform training sessions both in person and virtually for small and large groups.  I attend weekly, and monthly department, team and communications meetings. I coordinate five monthly regional nursing meetings to include producing the agenda, writing minutes, inviting guest speakers, and conducting the meetings both virtually and in person. I used Microsoft Office 365 including Word, PowerPoint and Excel; I am proficient in the use of SharePoint, Outlook, TEAMS, and Google Apps, along with various printers, scanners, and other office equipment.

Responsibilities included evaluation, pre-screening, and conducting intake assessments to include completing CIWA/COWS protocol to determine appropriateness for admission for substance abuse disorders. I consulted with physicians and referral sources regarding care plans/orders, and medication treatments; assisted clients with obtaining medications; administered medications; performed controlled  medication counts; gave injections;  and assessed clients with all healthcare needs. I performed HBV-B screenings. Developed, shared, researched, and provided clients education about medications, STD/HIV/other illness and about addiction and withdrawal. I used professional nursing techniques to care for recovery clients to encourage successful outcomes. I exhibited and implemented my knowledge of inherent dangers, and precautions to be taken, in the use of narcotics, other addictive medications and alcohol. Became trained in Narcan REVIVE to address potentially fatal narcotic overdose emergencies. I used Microsoft Office including Word and Excel, and Credible electronic health record to complete my daily documentation and work duties.

I provide direct clinical interventions for individuals per physician orders and care plans. I oversee and monitor staff nursing interventions for appropriate protocols, safety and consistent with plan of care. I document all activities appropriately in electronic health record for individuals. I review staff documentation for compliance with care standards and treatment plans, reporting concerns to staff supervisors. I perform reviews and investigations of incidents in programs to fulfill reporting requirements, analyze trends and to take appropriate corrective measures when indicated. I conduct root cause analysis on significant incidents in collaboration with program supervisor. I report qualified incidents to appropriate regulatory authorities. I support and consult with outside reviewers of services as needed. I consult with program supervisors in areas of risk management including but not limited to health, safety, clinical protocols, med management and self-care assistance. I develop nursing care plans for appropriate individuals in who qualify for skilled nursing care. I perform monthly physical assessments, monitor direct care to ensure quality of care provided under a skilled nursing plan of care. I consult with other health care professionals in the community on matters related to client care. I develop educational curriculum and train direct care staff on identified basic care risk factors for the intellectually disabled. I also carry out activities and duties consistent with practice standards and requirements of applicable regulatory agencies. I instruct the training program for the administration of drugs via percutaneous gastrostomy tube approved by the Board of Nursing, evaluate demonstrations of competency, reevaluations semi-annually. I instruct the administration of rectal diazepam, evaluate demonstrations of competency and semi-annual reevaluations, completing and maintaining student records as required by licensing agencies.

Medication Aide Trainer

I participated in the planning of each learning experience and am responsible for the teaching and evaluation of students. I was certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Board of Nursing to be a medication administration trainer. I conducted 32 hour training courses to include the additional 4 hour Diabetes module required for DBHDS licensed providers. I wrote lesson plans which followed the current DBHDS & DSS requirements, conducted lectures, engaged students in hands-on activities, and evaluated knowledge through testing for 20 students monthly.I ensure that course objectives are accomplished and the curriculum content has been completed and student records are maintained as required by 18VAC90-60-70 B.
