Nurse Leader Interview

NURS 490 – Nursing Leadership

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to assess leadership style and skills in a current nursing leader and identify areas for personal growth related to nursing leadership.

Approach to Assignment

My approach to this assignment began with distinguishing the main nurse leader in my life. The person I identified for this assignment was my supervisor and colleague at Boxwood Recovery Center, Danielle Gauthier. I started by preparing interview questions and reviewing the requirement for the assignment. Then I invited Danielle out for a long lunch as my treat to pay her for her time spent with me. She agreed, we had an enjoyable lunch, and I learned quiet a bit about her as a nurse leader.

Reason for Inclusion

I included this assignment because of the importance of nursing leadership. Some nurses just have all the qualities of leadership when they start, and some nurses must develop them through trial and error. This assignment gave me the opportunity to look at all the varieties and different approaches to leadership. It helped me to examine Danielle’s style of leadership and for me to identify my style of leadership.

Professionalism

  • Differentiates between general, institutional, and specialty-specific standards of practice to guide nursing care.

Nursing leadership is what guides nursing care within any health care setting. During the preparation and writing of the assignment I reviewed several varieties and approaches to nursing leadership which could be applied at any level of health care. Each environment requires a unique approach to nursing leadership and standards of care. Danielle’s shared with me that she thinks her approach to leadership has been adapted dependent on the setting in which she was working. Different leadership styles are more appropriate in an institutional facility as compared to specialized care facility.
